- Windows 98 STARTUP disk or SETUP disk?
- Posted by Brandon on July 28th, 2003
I just bought 40GB maxtor drive installed windows on it
then it crashed. now i need to reformat the drive with
MaxBlast (recommended by maxtor) not fdisk, but it says
insert a setup disk for windows 95/98/me (whichever
operating system i am using. Is a SETUP disk different
then the START DISK you make in win98. I lost my setup
disk!

A start disk will get you to the DOS prompt where you can execute DOS
commands (such as FDISK or FORMAT). You can get one at www.bootdisk.com. A
setup disk is a CD that contains the Windows setup routine (which you can
start from a DOS prompt) and the setup files, plus a lot of other utilities
and documentation. If you lost it you will have to buy a new one - try
e-Bay or the on-line stores. Some setup disks are bootable - that is, they
include the start disk.
I don't know why the Maxblast utility would ask for a setup disk. Perhaps
they really mean a start disk - what happens if you insert a start disk?
