Windows Protection Error
Posted by William B. Lurie on April 27th, 2008

Sorry to bother you with another problem.....but:
Loading 98 on a newly cleaned and formatted drive,
not Virtual PC.
Seems to install okay except that it "couldn't find"
some files so I let it skip those. It gets to where
it will boot only to Safe Mode. Booting to Normal gives
"Windows Protection Error".

Is this that same new machine? Like I said, it won't run Win98, NOT EVER.
The missing files are drivers files and the manufacturer of your new mobo
did not and will not ever make Win9x drivers for that board. This is what I
was trying to tell you last time until you reminded me that you were using
VPC. THAT will usually work on new hardware to run Win98. But without VPC,
forget about it.

It's that same problem, and I guess I ought to "bind it
as a reminder between my eyes". BTW, I guess that also
applies to ME, which has to have the 98 running, to upgrade
from, right?

1. Yes it applies to all Windows systems earlier than Win2000 (and perhaps
not even that in some cases?)

2. AFAIK, you do not have to first install Windows 98 in order to upgrade to
ME. Just start the ME setup.exe and when asked for proof of upgrade
eligibility, show it the Win98 disc.

with 98, still has it. She uses it only for e-mail

a machine that runs WIN 98. Slowly.

Bad news, Gary? What is, *is*. I worked around mine
by using VPC, and solved the graphing problem by
(luckily) finding a modern program, shareware for
a pittance ($25) that works just fine.

Boot into logged mode and check the last entries in your bootlog.txt
file. That should tell you what the system was trying to do just
before it errored out.

finally managed to convince me that modern machines do
not come with 98 drivers, and Microsoft has discontinued
their support, and the drivers are not available and
never will be. While it is not as convenient to run 98
in a Virtual PC under XP,(on those occasions when I must
run 98, it is a viable solution.

in (2) above. I didn't succeed in getting it to recognize
my ME CD at all. It just showed one line of gibberish starting
with MAC, with the / and \ spinning.....and spinning......
forever. You referred to the "ME setup.exe" but the VPC
creation didn't seem to see the CD. I tried rebooting and
so on...but to no avail.

Don't know what to say. I haven't spent all that much time with VPC, though
I do seem to recall a similar case or two while I was playing around with
it. Can't remember details.
