- Programming Windows CE 2 in Visual Basic or Visual C++
- Posted by Johan Kahn on August 7th, 2004
Hi,
I've been searching the web for ages, looking for some software that
will allow me, with my Phillips Nino 3xx PDA running Windows CE2, to
program in one Basic or C++ Visual and make a compiled program to be
able to install on my PDA device as other software.
I've only found software for PocketPC etc...
I'd like it is I could program it on my laptop using Visual Basic and
with a form for the Windows CE screen etc..
Thanks. If someone can help, please reply or email.

Microsoft no longer supports development for Windows CE 2.x, so you
won't find anything official from them. They still support eVB 3,
which _will_ work with the right SDK for your Nino. I'm sure eVB 3 is
still available for free from Microsoft's web site, but not sure
where; try going to the site and searching for eVB 3. I _think_ it
comes with a Palm-size PC SDK 1.2, but that is for the Palm-size PCs
running version 2.11 of the operating system. You need the older SDK,
and I don't know where you'll find it.
Microsoft used to _sell_ toolkits for VB 5 and VB 6 that would work
with the Palm-size PC SDK. I'm sure they no longer sell them. I have
no idea whether it would be legal for someone to give you a copy.
If you can get hold of old (3-6 year old) MSDN CDs, they would be a
good source of all these tools.
I think the best sources for alternatives are:
http://www.cewindows.net/developer/languages.htm
http://www.cegadgets.com/cedevtools.htm
http://www.pocketpcdn.com/tools/index.html
I came across the following while using google to find resources for
you:

Good luck.

If it is a CE 2.01 device then you will need to get the Visual C++ 6 /
Visual Basic 6 CE Toolkits. Otherwise you will need eVT. The eVT 2002
release doesn't have the SDK needed for 2.11 based Palm-size PC's you will
need to download it separetly.
The origianl eVT release (with the SDK) can be downloaded from here:

The Nino _is_ a 2.01 device, so the SDK for 2.11 based Palm-size PCs
will probably _not_ work. The original poster needs the earlier SDK.

Thank you Chris and Robert for your suggestions.. Looks like the only
way to go is Visual Tookkits.. Which apparantly I need to spend
$150+US or so to purchase.. This I can not afford so I think I'll just
stash my Palm away with the rest of the 'old technology' that is no
longer supported and deal with it :-)
I Already had Embedded toolkit on 2CD set which I download from MS a
year ago (or there-abouts) but only contains the SDK for 2.11 devices
or higher and not the 2.01 :-(
Thanks anyway
