- 1.2 to 3.0
- Posted by Bouffont on July 20th, 2005
Hi All,
I've had a look but not found anything on this - what is the deal with
licensing 3.0 if you've already got 1.2?
Can the 1.2 licenses be used in 3.0 or are we going to have to pay a
little extra?
Cheers
Tom

If you have valid Software Assurance cover on the current licensesI think
that you will get the new software as part of that. If not I think that you
have to buy it from scratch.

You are correct Pete. We ran into this between 1.0 and 1.2.

Peter,
This might be because it is an upgrade from 1.0 to 1.2. From 1.2 to 3.0 will
be different since it is another product.
Licencing details are not yet public. Please be patient regarding this one.

While the details are not yet public, this much is true: if you are current
with your software assurance, you will get upgrades to ANY version for free.
The license keys are different for each version and you will be issued new keys
when the time comes.

Does that remain true regardless of how long it has been since v3 was
launched? We have customers who have a policy of not using software
for a period after it has been released. The rationale is that they
let everyone else find the bugs and decide whether its worth getting.
So with CRMv3, assuming a 2006 release they wouldn't even contemplate
letting it through the door until 2007, would their licenses still be
upgraded for free?

As long as their Software Assurance is current they can upgrade to the
current version for free. They don't have to take it as soon as it is
released.

There also isn't anything to prevent them from upgrading to something that isn't
the current version (like someone on v1.0 waiting to upgrade to v1.2). They are
not required to upgrade, and the current version will be supported for quite a
while. There will come a point though where v1.2 will not be supported and they
will need to upgrade (though I highly doubt anyone will wait that long to move
to v3.0, there are just too many long awaited features).
