Camapign tracking issues

Hi this is my problem:
I send off a campaign email and everything goes off well. campaign responses
get tracked etc.
However if I send off an external email (not incl in campaign invite) and
that individual replys to it, it gets tracked with the campaign token...why
is this happeniing.
If I exit outlook straight after sending the campaign invite, this doesnt
happen.
