Cannot add Gold Partner License to MSDN License
Posted by Cat Wakefield on March 8th, 2005

I've installed CRM using the 5 user license from our MSDN download area "MSDN
Subscriber".
I then went to the MBS site to get our 25 gold partner action pack user
license.

Received the email with the key from MBS - however when i go into
CRM>Deployment Manager>License Manager>MSDN Subscriber - Add License - i put
this key in and it returns with "You must enter a valid license key".

Have been ringing around Microsoft for over a week, and i've been
transferred all over the world but no one seems to be able to help me!

The only thing i can think of is that the key in invalid OR that it's having
an issue with me trying to add a license key to the 'MSDN subscriber' - the
key i was sent also said "Your company name must be entered exactly as shown
below, as your registration keys are tied to this name".

Obviously my company name is not 'MSDN subscriber' - could this be the
problem???

What do i do? People have already started using this so i don't want to
reinstall it, and i'm reluctant to think this is the solution as the 25 user
license key i received has 24 characters, whereas the 5 user MSDN key has
only 21 characters.

CRM licence keys are inextricably bound to your organisation name

The MSDN subscriber licence key only works with an org called MSDN
Subscriber

Your partner licence key only works with your EXACT partner name agreed with
MS to match your partner licence key

You cannot add more licences to the subcriber installation.

You need to reinstall MS CRM

Thankyou - that's answered one question but raises another!
So i have to reinstall CRM using the new license key - however, we have CRM
installed on a front-end server, connected to a separate back-end server,
which has 4 databases, all named "MSDN_Subscriber_xxx" - now if i reinstall
CRM on the front-end server, how do i import the data or reconnect to these
databases? bearing in mind that we've been adding loads of contacts/info
which i really don't want to lose.... i've been searching all over the web
but i'm struggling to come up with any guides - can you give me any
guidelines on how to do this without losing everything, or point me in the
right direction on the web?
Thanks again.

You can use the Microsoft CRM Redeployment Tool (see
www.microsoft.cm/downloads ) to move data between CRM installations.

I've never used it myself, so cannot advise - especially if the source and
target SQL servers are the same

Someone else...?

Good luck!

Hi Cat,

Thanks for the post.
The CRM redeployment tool is available to download from the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...393-61DB-49AF-
9A50-4A90B311FA7D&displaylang=en

Instructions will also come with the tool. You can redeploy to the same
SQL server as the database names will be different. However you can only
have one CRM instance installed on a server.

I hope this helps you out.
Kind regards,
Mike Christl

Thanks for the replies!
I have progressed somewhat - i have followed the documentation word for
word, and i've now got to the reinstallation of CRM.
So i enter my license key with my new organisation name, lovely, then i get
to reconnect to existing database, so i specify the SQL server where i
restored the old databases to the new databases with the right name
(MSDN_Subscriber_MSCRM ---> Companyname_Ltd_MSCRM)... BUT, i then click on
Next, and i get the error:

"Setup could not find any valid Microsoft CRM databases for your
organization on the server specified. Select a different server."

I also KNOW that i've specified the correct new database name, as i tried to
install it with new databases and it said that they already exist on the
server.... why is it not finding the databases?
I've done everything - used all the appropriate tools as the steps outlined,
it's all been really successful so far.
Quite desperate! Help!

Hi Cat,

Usually this error means that the registration key and the name of the
organization do not match exactly. Registration keys are generated for
each Org and the name of the org needs to be EXACT.

Do you have access to the VOICE system to check out your reg keys?/

Thanks!
Mike Christl
