configure CRM
Posted by SM on January 29th, 2004

Hi
I have installed Microsoft CRM on a Windows 2000 Server
environment. SQL Server 2000 has also been installed
previously. While installing CRM, the server name was
specified (it took the machine name as default).

Now when I try to install Sales for Outlook, it first
installs an instance of MSDE SP3a and the Hotfix.
It then asks for the URL of the CRM server. When I enter
the machine name, it says "No instance of this server was
found". Is the server name any different from the server
name specified during the installation of CRM?

What am I doing wrong here? Please help.

No, I can't connect through the browser. The MSDE is
active.
Is this a URL I have to configure somewhere, or is it
just the server name. During installation, I allowed the
server to be named as the default machine name. I am
assuming this is the URL that is required.

Thanks,
Sarah

Yes the url should be something like http://yourcrmservername

If you cannot connect from a browser then of course the outlook client will
not connect either.

Ok next test. On the crmserver open a browser and for the url type in
http://localhost and tell me the results

When I try to open localhost, it gives an error
saying "The CRM server or security service cannot be
accessed or has been disabled". I do know for sure that
the server is running.
What do I do now?

Double check you services. Sounds like the CRM Security service isn't
running. If you have SQL running on the same machine as CRM, you may
need to re-register the sercurity service to be dependant on SQL.
This can be done by running crmsecurityservice.exe -r -s

Bingo! I started the security service and now it works.
But now when I try to install Sales for Outlook and
specify the default URL http://localhost setup continues
but then gives and error saying that installation had to
stop prematurely.

Thanks for the help guys.

You shouldn't install the Sales for Outlook client on the actual CRM
server. This should be done on a seperate machine.
