CRM 1.2 to 3
Posted by Hitesh Varsani on May 1st, 2008

I have a CRM1.2 database which has been put onto an SQL2005 server in
SQL 2000 compatability mode.
The site it was at was migrating from SQL 2000 and the CRM1.2 system
was no longer in user, so they moved the database (backup from old
server and resotre to new) over to the new server before getting rid of
the old one.

Is there any way this database can be upgraded to use CRM v3 (and then
onto v4)
I know 1.2 isnt supported on SQL 2005, so I cant install 1.2 for this
upgrade process.
The old SQL 2000 machine is no longer available, and the backup taken
prior to the move has gone as well.

If all you have is the CRM 1.2 database and no front end, there really isn't
a clean way to upgrade the database. The path you would have to take would
be to find a server with SQL 2000 or install SQL 2000 on your SQL 2005
server, restore the CRM 1.2 database to it, install CRM 1.2 against that
database, and then upgrade to 3.0, migrate the database to SQL 2005, then
upgrade that to CRM 4.0. If that seems like a long process, it would be.
This process would most likely fail for a number of reasons, if the Active
Directory groups aren't there, if some of the users aren't there.

I recommend installing CRM 4.0 on the SQL 2005 server and using import tools
to get the data in from the CRM 1.2 database. The basic fields you would
need from the core records all map directly from 1.2 to 4.0 and you can
assign and edit the records in 4.0 much more easily than in 3.0.

Richard,

I have CRM4 installed on a server to try and migrate the data.
Do you know if the DMM would be the best way to go? Would I need to
create all the mappings or do you know of any 1.2 to 4 data maps that
might be around?

I don't know of any 1.2 to 4.0 mappings, but it shouldn't be that difficult
to create some, since the important parts of the schema are the same.

Hi,

I would recommend the data migration route as Richard indicated. 3
options for you to do you data migration.

1. Use the DMM tool provided for CRM 4.0. For your mapping, the data
migration map editor should come in handy. You can get the tool from
http://blogs.msdn.com/crm/archive/20...4-0-redux.aspx
2. Use some other 3rd party products from c360, Scribe to do your data
migration.
3. Write a custom app through using the CRM SDK.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I am having the same issue with having to migrate all the data over. How
did your migration process go? What steps did you take to get the data to
migrate correctly? Thanks!
