CRM 3.0 and SharePoint on the same server ?
Posted by Guillaume Tamisier on February 19th, 2006

Is it possible to install Dynamics CRM 3.0 and SharePoint Portal Server 2003
on the same server (a Windows Server 2003 one, not SBS)?

I read that both need to access the default web site through
http://<servername>, so I suspect a conflict.

There are other posts with the same question, but they concern CRM 1.2, not
CRM 3.0.

Thanks.

Yes, it can be done. Setup the Microsoft CRM 3.0 server to run on a
different port i.e. 5555

There is an option during the install and you can select to create a new
website for the Microsoft CRM 3.0 server.

Alternatively you can set up your server with multiple ip addresses and
bind each site to a specific address. I've CRM + Sharepoint +
Reporting Services all running on a single server but each bound to a
seperate ip address. The advantage to doing it this way is that your
users dont have to remember the port number after the url.

In the Microsoft CRM 3.0 Implementation Guide, on page 15-2, we can read
that "The default Web site must be accessible through http://<servername>.
Host headers cannot be used and the Web site must be on port 80."

So it's a bug in the documentation ?

Thanks.

I ran into this same confusion. The default instance of SBS was not allowing
me to access the sharepoint instance of CRM. I looked up the error code and
I found something that had me twisting through all kinds of special command
line codes to no avail. I am going to try this again today. Does anyone
know where I can find good documentation on the install. I am not dealing
with anything special, I simply have one sbs2003 box with the default
sharepoint site and exchange running on it.

The original question was about SharePoint Portal Server...I don't have
a link but I do recall reading that Microsoft says NOT to install Portal
Server on the same server as Exchange...something about them being based on
the same database engine?

Installing CRM on a server with Windows SharePoint Services works
fine...

The IG contradicts itself if I recall correctly. I believe it also says
to NOT install CRM onto the default web site, and NOT to install it on the
SharePoint site. For me CRM offered to install on http://<servername>:5555,
however, I was able to make it accessible via http://crm as well using a
host header (see KB article 909580).

One big issue is that the Small Business version of CRM gets to the
final customization phase and seems to hang forever if you haven't already
used setspn per the KB article. In reality it failed authentication
immediately but never returns an error to the user.
