CRM 3.0 VSS Writer Timeout - Backup Errors

I continue to have problems when backing up my CRM server. It is a 2003
std member server and i am using veritas backup exec 10(on another
server) to backup. A 3rd party is doing the crm work and we have yet to
go live. They are working on customizing and sync with our accounting
sql database. Up until a week ago, the crm server backup up fine(all
software was installed at this point). During the CRM config process,
something got "turned on" to start my problem. I am getting timeout
errors with my VSS writers on that server. I downloaded a MS hotfix that
was supposed to help timeout issue. It didn't help. I did determine that
if i unselected System State and Service State from the backup
selections, the backup now succeeds. My question is...is system state
and service state necessary on a CRM server running on a member server?
I am backing up all the harddrive content and sql databases. Anything
with the CRM 3.0, SCRIBE or Dynamics connector that would cause the
writers to timout? All sync'ing is supposed to be turned off at night.
My thinking is that something CRM related is causing too much activity
of some sort to let the writers get a snapshot. The only event log
entries at night are application log based - Microsoft Gatherer
informational events.
