crmaddin.dll
Posted by Christopher Grove on March 12th, 2008

Hi all,
still in our pilot test phase for the Outlook Client for CRM 3.0 /
Outlook 2003 and have just got another problem.
Yet another user who's crmaddin.dll seems to be playing up.

I've found this link that talks about the problem a bit but doesn't give me
a solution that I can use...
http://blogs.msdn.com/mscrmfreak/arc...27/584957.aspx

We're wanting to roll this client out on approx. 200 pcs. While the unistall
CRM client, redo the Windows profile, re-install CRM client method does
work, we clearly can't apply the same solution each time one of the users
loses the possibility
to use the CRM client menu.
The Roll Up 2 has been installed on his pc.

Apparently this can happen if the CRM client isn't used on a day to day
basis. Surely there must be a solution for keeping it stable on a pc? Does
anyone have any other ideas, please?

The user does not have local admin rights and we won't be able to give them
to him and the 200 other users who should have this client installed.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

What error messages pop up when Outlook opens; is the CRM toolbary grey every
time, only the first time, or is sporadic? Does Outlook crash at all? Is
this the laptop client or desktop client?

Hi Richard,
The user didn't mention an error message earlier today, I'll have to check
with him tomorrow for more details. When I looked earlier, the CRM menu was
not greyed out, but clicking on one of the options didn't result in any
action.

The Outlook client did work beforehand (we fixed the crashing problem with
the Rollup 2), have already fixed one error message indicating insufficiant
access rights by checking the Go Offline option in the CRM. That said, we're
running the Desktop version, not the Laptop version (which the Go Offline
option should have been for as I understood things). The Synchronize with
Outlook option is also checked.

The crmaddin.dll is not in the Disabled Items list, but it's no longer in
the COM Add-Ins list and I can't select it either.
I've also tried disactivating a Pop-Up Blocker (can apparently also be a
problem).

Any ideas?
Thanks for your help!
Christopher

The fact that the toolbar shows up but the addin is not listed in COM AddIns
could indicate the user is not logging on to the computer as the same user
who installed the CRM client. Try two things: View CRM data by navigating
into the CRM folder structure in Outlook. If that works, then we know the
user is logged in as the user who installed the CRM client.

Second thing to try: Right click in the toolbar area and choose Customize.
On the toolbars tab, select the CRM toolbar and click delete. Close and then
open Outlook. if the toolbar comes back, it should be working. If the
toolbar doesn't come back, it looks like the user is not logged on to the
workstation as the user who installed the CRM client. You mentioned none of
the users are local admins, how were the clients installed initially?

Hi Richard,
no, the way we've installed the client on the beta testers' pcs is by making
them local admin so that we can install the Outlook Client with their
account, and then removing the local admin access rights. Following this, the
Outlook Client worked on this user's pc.

I can confirm that:
- there are no error messages on startup of Outlook in this case (or at
least non so far)
- the user can navigate in the CRM using the folder structure in Outlook.

I'll try the CRM toolbar delete this evening. That said, we've already tried
that with another user who had a similar problem (he reported error messages
as well as the other symptoms) with no success. In the end we had to redo his
Windows profile...
If you've got any other ideas that I can try while I'm working on his pc,
I'd appreciate being able to try them as well.
I've looked again on the Internet and haven't found much more to help. One
thing I did find with somebody else who had a problem with the crmaddin.dll
was somebody asking a question (but with no more detail) as to the type of
Outlook setup (POP3/SMTP or Exchange). If it could spark any ideas, we run
with Exchange servers.

Thanks again for your help

Ok, just tried deleting the CRM Toolbar, and it didn't come back.
I recreated it, but I've still got the same problem and I still can't
re-attach the crmaddin.dll.
I checked in the Event Viewer and saw a whole load of MSCRMAddressBook
errors. So, I've checked the CRM Address Book option for his role, but that
hasn't fixed the menu problem (I doubted it was linked, but had to try).
I'm clutching at straws now unfortunately... Any more ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me.
