Hi John,
I was also facing this problem that my browser used to close down
whenever I connect to CRM. In mu case the isseu was with the pop up blocker.
I unchecked the option and it started working.

But here is another approach that we are taking with a current project.
Replace the CRM interface. It is possible to re-create the CRM interface
with your own ASPX pages using the CRM SDK. We are replacing a good number
of the screens but still using some of the "native" CRM screens as well.

You could even rebuild the interface in sharepoint portal! The only
limitation is finding someone to pay for the time to do it.

How do we create these aspx pages. I mean i would be developing these using
