- Importing data into CRM
- Posted by Krista Schriml on September 6th, 2004
We initially implemented CRM about 6 months ago. Since
then, we have received approximately 3 lists with a total
of about 4,000 contacts and accounts from various
sources. I would like to import this data but there
doesn't seem to be a good way to do so. If I import using
the import wizard, I lose a great deal of valuable data by
the time the data gets to its final destination (contact
or account tables). In addition, many of the records I
would like to import are updates or duplicates. How is it
possibly useful to have an import function that cannot
check for duplicates or updates? Has anyone figured out a
way around this?
When answering, please bear in mind that no one in my firm
is especially technically savvy. This application is no
where as easy to implement and maintain as the sales guys
and microsoft partners we talked to led us to believe it
would be.
I appreciate any help you can give me....

Hi Krista,
I recommend that you investigate Scribe Insight for Microsoft CRM,
www.scribesoft.com.
This tool allows you to import almost any data (especially lists) into any
targets (e.g. Leads or Contacts or Accounts, etc.)
You can get a demo version that allows up to 100 records imported.

Have you tried using the Data Migration Framework?
It imports the data onto CDF Database before migrating it
onto MSCRM. While on the CDF Database, there are several
tools to cleanup the data, although Duplicate checking is
not part of them, bhut you could create Stored procedures
to do that as long as you specify which combined fields
would qualify a Duplicate record.

I have looked into Scribe. It seems to be a good tool. I
would like to present multiple options. Are there any
other 3rd party tools that can be used for this?
Also, I got the impression from somewhere (and now I can't
remember where) that the data migration framework was only
to be used for an initial migration. Would it be
supported in this instance?
Thanks for all of your help!

Another option is to get someone to write a company specific integration.
This is not usually recommended unless the other end that you are importing
from is something that requires really specialist knowledge to extract the
data out of. Of course, you will probably have to hire someone in to do
this so it is expensive - especially 3 months later when you need to change
one field.

Ali,
Go onto community.scribesoft.com - there is a download there. I think that
you have to contact them for a license/password.
