- Importing leads and contacts "best practice"

I am working with the Data Migrtion Framework and CRM v3.0. My question is
regarding the "best practice" steps for importing existing leads and
contacts. Here is what I'm considering at the moment:
1. Import all records as leads
2. Import customers as contact records
3. Update lead records with contact record ID where appropriate
Any thoughts or "best practice" advise? Thanks!
