- Install fails with "unable to create root business"
- Posted by Alan Hamilton on July 21st, 2005
I have been trying to install MS CRM 1.2 on an SBS2003 server (clean install)
with SQL2000 SP3a. The installation runs right through until what seems to
be near the end. I watch it creating the organisation and then get a message
"Unable to install CRM Server. Unable to provision the organisations.
Unable to create root business".
Reading through some of the other threads here I see that AD and DNS has
some effect on this. I have not had any problems with DNS on the box but for
good measure created the server as a BDC in case this helped - it didn't.
The logging ends with:
=== Logging stopped: 21/07/2005 07:43:50 ===
MSI (c) (E8:A0): Note: 1: 1707
MSI (c) (E8:A0): Product: Microsoft CRM Server -- Installation operation
completed successfully.
MSI (c) (E8:A0): Grabbed execution mutex.
MSI (c) (E8:A0): Cleaning up uninstalled install packages, if any exist
MSI (c) (E8:A0): MainEngineThread is returning 0
=== Verbose logging stopped: 21/07/2005 07:43:50 ===
It suggests that the installation is fine, but of course when I try to run
the system, it doesn't work.
Can anyone give me some advice on fixing this?

Ronald
Thanks for your help on this. I had a look at the link you provided but am
no further forward.
The frustrating thing is that I have installed CRM on another system before
without any hassle at all!
Thanks for your reply.

1. Check SQL Server and CRM server machine accounts and CRM service accounts
are members of the Pre-Windows 2000 Compatible Access Group. If not, add
them and reboot
2. Check Windows Indexing service installed and running on CRM server
3. If all else fails, make the account running the CRMsecurityservice a
member of Domain Admins (for now)

Peter
Thanks for your help. I tweaked the security settings to use the
Administrator account during the install process. I know this is not really
how it should be done, but it installed.
Thanks for your help.
