Installation of CRM Server results in unknown error (80040E14)
Posted by Ron Heaton on June 1st, 2004

Hope someone can help me here. I am installing MS CRM
v1.2 as per the Installation Guide. I am setting up a
demo environment on all Win2K servers, SP4, MS SQL 2000
SP3a. I have setup AD01, AD02, CRM01, CRMSQL01 and
EXBE01. I am not up to installing the CRM Server onto
CRM01 but get the following error:

Microsoft CRM Server Setup
Setup was unable to install Microsoft CRM Server.
Setup was unable to grant access to the Microsoft CRM
databases.
Unknown error. (80040E14)

This error occurs when the install wizard is up to:

Creating and configuring databases...
Creating indices in database (server:11 - index.sql)

Clicking OK to the error closes down the installer.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Ron.

Ron,

There are 2 common items that could relate to this problem:

1) The physical DB files were not removed completely from a previous install.
You can fix this by manually removing the files. They are typically found in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data and will have a name like
"Adventure Works....".

2) The DB server & CRM Server are authenticating to different domain
controllers. As a result, the AD changes made by the install didn't replicate
to the other DC in time for SQL to pick them up. You can manually force the
replication between the DC when the SQL scripts start to eliminate this problem.

Thanks Matt,

I have checked my SQL server and there are such databases present. I kicked
off the installation again and whilst the scripts were running, forced
replication to the second domain server (and checked that it was done before
the scripts finished) but alas, still the same error.

Could there be anything else I am missing?

Cheers,

Ron.

Ron,

Try verifying everything was removed previously. Check AD to see if the OU is
already there, if it is, delete it. Drop the DB's if they are there as well
and make sure the underlying files are not there.

Other than that, not sure what else to check as these are the typical causes of
this particular issue.

In my case, I had previously uninstalled CRM, but several Maintenance Plans
were still
on the SQL server that had held the CRM databases. I received the error
until I got
rid of the Maintenance Plans. After that, the install succeeded.
