Installing CRM Server on AD Machine
Posted by Stan Guss on December 14th, 2003

When I try to install CRM Server on my AD Machine I am
getting the following message:

"Your Active Directory deployment must be in native mode."

I was looking for some guidance... I am not sure where to
go from here.

Thank you in advance.

First you need to switch to Native Mode, second forget doing it anyway for
now, you can not install CRM on a DC. It will fail.

Sorry fro the bad news.

I have my demo/test system running on a single machine (spammed up HP
laptop). I installed W2K server (promoted it to a DC in native made),
Exchange 2000 and SQL 2000. These are all full installs, not SBS.

I have sucessfully installed MSCRM V1.0 and 1.2 Beta without problems
(making sure that I had the correct .Net framework installed!!). I also
connect to this via another laptop in order to use the Outlook Client.

Should my install have failed?....I was under the imperssion that it was
just bad practice to install apps on the PDC, not that it wasn't
supported.......any comments?

Regards

Peter

The install itself will work, but you will most likely run into problems
with the Outlook client and getting it to go offline.

I thought you couldn't have the Outlook client on the same machine as the
CRM SQL Server 2000 database because of conflicts between the MSDE install
for the Outlook client and the SQL Server installation.

Yes, you can install CRM server on a DC. It is a supported config. You
can't install the outlook client on the CRM server however...it will
install, but it won't function correctly.

Alan, you are right. I think people are confusing installing CRM Server on
the AD machine, with installing the Outlook client on the CRM Server. The
first is a supported config, the second is not. The Outlook client will
install on the CRM server, but it won't function correctly.

Alan,

I'm not sure about installing the Outlook client on the SQL machine as I've
never tried that. I know you can't install it on the same machine as the
CRM components. I know I have isntalled the Outlook client on a machine
that has SQL on it though and there were no conflicts between the MSDE and
the existing SQL install. CRM installs a named instance, so they should be
able to coexist. The only potential problem that might occur could be with
the offline synchronization.

Where did all this stuff come from on this thread about the Outlook
Client? - LOOK at the original subject!!

It is no wonder some people get confused if responders do not answer the
question that was posted!!!

Actually both configurations are unsupported - installing
the CRM server to a DC and installing the SFO client on
the CRM server.
