Mail Merge to Case Functionality v4.0
Posted by Mary on May 5th, 2008

Hi,

I am currently working with a customer who has a requirement to be able to
do direct mail merges (to documents) with information captured and stored
within the case entity.

I was very surprised that even though CRM v4.0 allows mail merges with other
standard entities and all custom entities, the case entity is not one of
these. This is a shame as I believe this should have been one of the primary
entities in CRM that a user should be able to perform mail merges on since it
handles enquiry management information and resolution - most of which need to
be able to be sent back to the customer.

Does anyone know of a way to enable the mail merge features for the case
entity (ie. display the mail merge icon and option on the toolbars)? If not,
can anyone provide any guidance with regards to an alternative way to allow
users to do mail merge on a case? We have considered creating a custom entity
off case from which we can do the mail merge on but don't think is a great
option from a usability point of view ... ??

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated !!

Thanks,
Maryse

Hi,

One possibility would be to use "Documents Core Pack for MS CRM 4.0". This
Add-ON gives you the possibility to use all entities to generate documents.
Also you have to possibility to get data from all related data.

If you are interested in detailed information, please take a look at
www.mscrm-addons.com or send us an email.

Regards,
Christian Ternek

Hi Mary,

I have this link
(http://blog.sonomapartners.com/2008/...ng-mail-m.html) which talks
about enabling mail merge for custom entities upgrade from CRM3. For this you
need to export the entity, edit the XML to change a setting to allow mail
merge, then import the XML.
I expect this may well also work for the Case entity, but have to say I have
not tested it!

Hope this helps

Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the great link, I've tried this out and its seems to work well at
first glance which is great (!) ... my only question would be around whether
or not this would be considered a "supported" customization since the case
entity is a standard one rather than custom?

Thanks heaps in advance!
Mary
