Mail merge error: A supported version of Microsoft Word is not ins

Some of our users are experiencing a problem when they attempt to mail merge
within an account or subaccount.
In the sales for outlook client, they:
1) open an account
2) select Action, Mail Merge
3) The error: A supported version of Microsoft Word is not installed.
Microsoft Word 2000 or later is required.
is displayed in a message box.

All machines are xp pro, with office xp.

The problem is intermittent.

It works for a while, then once it occurs the problem persists until the
machine is rebooted.
