Microsoft CRM in two domains in same forest?
Posted by Sylvain Belanger on July 16th, 2004

Hi,

I'd like to ask if it is possible to install Microsoft CRM in two domains
within the same forest. Each domains would have its own Domain Controllers,
Web Server and SQL Servers to install Microsoft CRM.

What do you think?

Thanks !
Sylvain

I don't see why not, as far as my knowledge. I havent seen anything that
says you cannot install within the same forest, or even on the same active
directory (I would get out of the habit of referring to them as domain
controllers - after all it doesnt install on NT). Good practise though is to
create an OU to hold the business unit underneath as created by each install
of CRM.

Are there any other rules you wish to stipulate like business rules between
the two. I don't think that would work. As long as they are seperate I don't
see any problem. You would probably need seperate Exchange servers for the
router for each too.

The need for a separate exchange server is definitely
correct. The Email router can only handle one deployment
at a time. So you are looking at a two exchange server
deployment to accomodate a two MSCRM system deployment.

We have done this.

We have one server running our production system, and
another server running a test environment. However, we
are not using email in the test environment - so far no
need. Both servers are Domain controllers (so that the
test server can be taken to a client site and still
function without taking functionality away from the
production envirpnment. We have created a trust between
the two domains.

So far it is working as expected.
