- Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 for Outlook cannot be installed
- Posted by Ryan on March 20th, 2008
Upon trying to install the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 for outlook plug-in I’m
receiving the following error message.
"Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 for Outlook cannot be installed on a computer
where Microsoft Exchange Server versions prior to Exchange Server 2007 are
installed"
I would like to know whether I need to upgrade my Exchange infrastructure to
Exchange 2007 to enable the use of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 for outlook
plug-in, I can’t find any documentation stating that Exchange 2007 is a
pre-requisite or requirement.
Kind Regards

Exchange 2007 isn't a requirement for the CRM Outlook client, but it seems
you are trying to install onto a machine with an older Exchange version,
probably Exchange 2003. It's not possible to install the Outlook Client in
this environment. However, you can install on every other machine. If it is
a test environment and you want to run the CRM Server and Client on the same
box, then don't use Exchange at all. It's not required and besides eating up
a great amount of resources, it won't help you that much. If it is a test
environment, I recommend to start from scratch. I did the same before and
haven't got to a point to convince the Outlook Client setup that Exchange
isn't installed anymore. Exchange 2007 is available for x64 systems only,
which may be another reason not to go for it.

Michael,
The issue is that this particular error occurs when attempting to install
CRM 4.0 client on Windows 2003 Terminal Server which never had any Exchange
2003 Server, including Management Tools installed. It does, however, have
Outlook 2003 profiles that are and/or were once configured for Exchange 2003
server. Same error occurs on 3 different networks. No problems experienced on
new terminal server that has Outlook 2007 set up for Exchange 2007 profiles
only.

Resolved
Solution (ONLY for server that does not run any production Exchange
servers), in my case issue was with Terminal Server.
Open registry editor.
Export everything under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange key.
Delete the key.
Install CRM client and then re-import the key back in.
