Migration of BCM data to CRM 3.0 Professional
Posted by Markus R on November 21st, 2005

Hi,
looking at the differences b/w the professional and SBS edition of CRM 3.0,
I found that the profession edition is lacking a feature we need to get
started, i.e. the BCM data migration wizard. This is vital to rapid
production use of CRM 3.0 due to our large customer history base in BCM.
OTOH, installing the SBS edition is not an option, since we are not running
any SBS server, but rather an outgrown Windows Server 2003 infrastructure.

Questions:
1. Is the BCM migration wizard available (technically) in the professional
version of CRM 3.0?
2. If the answer to question 1 is yes, are we (license) allowed to use it?
3. If the answer to question 1 is no, how can I migrate our BCM data to CRM
3.0?

Thanks for any pointers,

Markus Ruppel

I believe there will be a Data Migration Framework for version 3.0 as well.
This should be coming with GA.

Thanks for the response. We have access to the SBS edition as well. Is it
possible to use the migration wizard of the SBS edition and kind of redirect
it to another incarnation of CRM 3.0, e.g. the professional version?

I really don't get why Microsoft did not anticipate the need to migrate data
from BCM for organizations which want to use the professional version of CRM.
For example, in quite a few (larger) companies I know there are teams using
BCM based data sharing for sales purposes. We would like to support their
move to CRM 3.0 professional without having to use further 3rd party add-ons
if at all possible. Maybe someone from Microsoft could shed some light on
this issue?

Thanks,

I'm not too experienced with BCM, but doesn't this program offer a
possibility to export the contacts to csv? Csv files can be imported easily
within crm using the UI.

Hope this helps,

Too bad to hear that. I have overlooked that message.

Until then you'll have to stick with Scribe, the import in the UI or create
an own import program (my preferred solution).

Hi Arne,

This is not a public tool, so not everybody can use that. Ofcourse Avanade
can be hired to deliver solutions, but the ETL is not for everybody to use
AFAIK.

BCM consists basicly of a few Outlook forms, some code and a MSDE DB, which
can be shared by several users. Quite powerful though, considering it's free
for licensed Office users.
Moving the contacts and opportunities would not be the issue, it is all the
history information (phone logs, business notes, tasks, (links to) emails,
....) which goes along with them.

Again, I do not understand why CRM 3.0 SBS-edition includes a migration
wizard for BCM data whereas the CRM 3.0 Professional edition does not.

What about the Data Migration Framework, would that allow easy migration of
BCM data?

Thanks,
Markus Ruppel

It sounds weird to me that there's only a migration path for the SBS version.
Is it possible for you to install a test server with SBS and CRM for SBS and
do the migration there and move the data to the professional CRM afterwards?

I would call the migration with the Data Migration Framework relatively
easy. This all depends on your knowledge of databases, Data Transformation
Services and other computer skills. If you do not feel comfortable with this,
then I would advice Scribe.

Well, it is weird and I was quite surprised after looking at the feature
comparison in the implementation guide. I thought about going through the
SBS version as a kind of gate for the BCM data, but have to check before how
I can migrate the data from the SBS version to the Professional version. The
data migration framework might help in the long run after its release.
As a MS certified partner, we should find someone who dives into the details
:-)

Thanks,
Markus
