I need to record on CRM that we sent a mailing (which was
not originated from CRM) to a large number of contacts.
Obviously this would be best done by creating
activities. I have looked at a couple of ways of doing
this:

1. Use MailMerge to create a spoof Word doc that gives
the impression that a letter was sent. This is OK, but
only records an activity with the subject 'Microsoft Word
Doc', which clearly isn't descriptive enough to indicate
the actual nature of the mailing.

2. Create multiple activities using Workflow. This does
create the activities, but leaves them incomplete, and
there appears to be no way of completing multiple
activities in one hit.

Does anyone have any ideas? If I could customise the
MailMerge subject this would be the best solution, but I
cannot find a way of doing this.
