Outlook 2003 w/BCM purchase decision
Posted by Don Jarrell on October 22nd, 2003

I am a consultant (NOT contract techie) in a small firm
and advise several other small-large businesses and
entrepreneurs on high-level tech strategy, licensing and
product management. I am not interested in serious devel
efforts. Regarding Office 2003, I have enough info to
determine that I will do only one of the following on my
WinXP-HE machines:

a) ignore Office 2003 and keep Office 2000
b) obtain Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager and
keep the other Office 2000 appls

With option b, how much of the advertised functionality
and benefits of Outlook 2003 w/BCM will be lost or
compromised ?

Respond directly to donNOSPAM-at-

Thanks. DJinAustin

Don,

To the best of my knowledge, BCM is only available as a part of the Office
Small Business and Professional Suites. It is not sold with Outlook 2003
stand alone. Please note, BCM does not allow people to share the BCM data.
Hopefully some 3rd party software will come out that replicates to allow
sharing.

Office XP was a big improvement over 2000 and 2003 is the same. If I had
clients on 2000, I'd suggest they buy Office 2003 Pro with software
assurance. I would also use WinXP Pro for business networks.

HTH,
Josh

Office 2003 is a big improvement. Especially Outlook. But you can only
take advantage of alot of the features if you have Windows 2003 server and
Exchange 2003 server.
..
Buying software assurance is a joke. It's only good for 2 years and when
has Microsoft come up with an upgrade for a product every two years?

Jeremy,

Microsoft plans new version releases of Office for every 18 months. I
prefer the old version upgrade discounts. Because Software Assurance
replaced version upgrade pricing, if you don't buy SA, you're faced with
paying FULL retail version prices. The price of Software Assurance even if
you buy it twice (4 years) is often less than the full version price. It's
basically the same thing as the old upgrade pricing, but you have to pay for
it at the time of purchase then every 24 months thereafter.

Just hope your customer doesn't pick up a Staples/Sams/CDW catalog and see
that Microsoft still sells retail boxed upgrades at $125 less than open
license. Software Assurance has not proven valuable for my customers, its a
roll of the dice for the customer.
