Outlook 2007 crashing with CRM4 desktop client
Posted by Mike W on February 25th, 2008

Outlook 2007 crashes and I get the message below in Event Viewer after I
click Synchronize Outlook with CRM. The crash is not immediate, it says
Checking for Changes and there is a status bar, but 60-90 seconds later
Outlook dies.

I have tried rebuilding my Outlook profile, deleting the two outlook folders
in documents and settings, reinstalling the crm client, reinstalling office,
and reinstalling all the .net frameworks.. I also disabled Contact
synchronization before clicking Synchronize, but that didn't help.

I do not have any other Outlook plugins installed.. Rebuilding the Outlook
profile fixed this problem for a couple of the users in my organization, but
I am still suffering.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

As crazy as this sounds, try looking for both contacts in Outlook and CRM
that have the birthday field populated with dates before 1970...

Seriously. I had the same issue, clearing the birthday fields resolved it.

Microsoft says Hotfix is pending...

I don't think this is the problem because I have disabled Contact
synchronization and Outlook still crashes. If I disable all synchronization
then it doesn't crash, but I really need Calendar synchronization at a
minimum..

Thanks,
Mike

I'm having the same "EXACT" error with Outlook 2007 and the CRM 4.0
client.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Microsoft Office 12
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 2/25/2008
Time: 5:12:16 PM
User: N/A
Computer: CORE2DUAL
Description:

471eb5ae, debug? 0, fault address 0x00014884.

I basically tried everything you did (except rebuilding the outlook
profile) and still having the crashing with msvcr80.dll. (I even tried
different version of this file to see if there was a problem with the
version of msvcr80.dll....)

I am quite sure its not a "birthday/anniversay" date problem, because
I have disabled synchronization of contacts and still get the crash.
(I actually disabled all objects for synchronization....i.e.
appointments, contacts, my tasks, my phone calls, my letters and my
faxes, and yet if I manually start the sync process, outlook STILL
crashes.........

Like you, I have no idea how to fix this problem.....
I though I was the only one who was experiencing this error but I
guess I'm not alone........

Hi,
I have the same problem.

- 100% not the dateproblem (we have not one birthday in the database)

In my case the problem seems to be in connection with the following:

- only the online clients
- where outlook does not use offline-cash

We really try to find the problem, but it would be great if someone is
faster :-)

best regards

I have come to the conclusion that it is something about either the User
Profile or the Windows install, my next task is to determine which of those
is the cause.. What I did is install Windows XP, Office 2007, and CRM 4.0
Client on a virtual machine and joined it to the domain. When I Synchronize
with CRM there is no crash, it works perfectly. I think this means that it
has nothing to do with the data in CRM and Outlook..

Sorry to keep replying to myself, but I keep finding more information about
the problem... I had a user who's CRM client was working properly on their PC
log into my PC and configured Outlook and CRM under their account. I switched
my PC to their Synchronizing account and was able to Synchronize Contacts,
Calendar, and Tasks successfully.

Sorry if those sentences are somewhat convoluted, but I think I can conclude
that the problem is just my user profile, not the windows install itself.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to track this down further?

Thanks,
Mike

We are having the EXACT same problem on one machine in our
enviornment. The machine is using Outook 2007 with the CRM 4 client.
This problem occurs when ANY of the objests are set to sync. This has
error has nothing to do with the birthday before 1970 problem. I am
submitting a ticket with MSFT right now (on hold, what a surprise), so
I will keep you guys updated on the situation.

Let me know if anyone found a resolution/workaround or anything else.

Thanks,

Hey Guys,

Ok, I just got off the phone with Microsoft. The technician I spoke
to is convinced that there is something wrong with the data in CRM,
not the user machine/profile/user account. He had me run a trace, and
he is going to look at them tonight and get back to me tomorrow.

I will let you guys know what he found.

Thanks,

a hotfix... off to search on google crm groups now.....

I am having the same problem and any information you have that can fix the
issue would be greatly appreciated. Have you heard back from Microsoft?

Gents,

Just to qualify my environment before I make any comments/suggestions; I am
using the Desktop Client and not the Laptop client for CRM 4.0 with Outlook
2007 (SP1) and I am experiencing all of the same issues as you've all
expressed.

The issue is definitely related to Synchronisation and nothing else.
Although no HotFix has been released as yet, you can alleviate the problem
(although not elegant or desirable long term) by using the following method.

To prevent constant Outlook 2003 or 2007 crashes; go to the Sychnronisation
Tab under CRM options and uncheck / turn-off "Synchronize the CRM items in
my Outlook folders every..." which can be found right down the bottom of the
page under "Schedule automatic synchronization with Outlook".

I swithced this feature off and Outllook ran without hiccup, with full
access to CRM data, for more than an hour. To test the theory I turned it
back on and within less than a minute Outlook crashed.

Something in the synchronisation tool is conflicting with CRM data that it
wants to post back into the Outlook.ost file and so I would expect a lengthy
resolution time before MS puts its finger on the culprit.

Hope this helps you guys and anyone else experiencing this issue.

Kind Regards,
Manuel

I am having same issue and I am Connecting the CRM Live EAII. Are your
issues with CRM live or the On Prem versions?

We were having this issue with only a few of the twenty-some clients we
installed last week. (We have no data in the birthdate field so that wasn't
our problem.) After reading this thread, I tried re-creating the Mail profile
on one offending machine and the problem seems to have been resolved: now the
client synchs like nobody's business! My techs will apply this "fix" to the
other problematic clients; hopefully we'll have 100% resolution.

Has anyone figured out what creates this issue with the Mail profile in the
first place? It seems only to be sensitive to CRM since Outlook works just
fine if the CRM client is disabled.

Vasya,

Well, it looks like your solution worked for me.....

I did what you suggested and deleted my Outlook profile, and recreated
it, and now the CRM sync works without a problem so far. (about an
Hour since I made the change). I know its syncing since I just added a
service activity in CRM and it showed up in my Outlook Calendar.

Hopefully this fix will stick and not re-appear. Its a simple enough
solution that I should have tried since others have hinted that it may
be a problem with the Outlook profile.

Thanks for the fix.

Hey All,

I have had ongoing talks with Microsoft for several days now, and
there is no resolution at this point. Our problem is data specific,
as I have created a different user profile on the same machine with
the same user and the problem still occurs, but if I log on as anyone
else and sync, nothing happens. The problem has gotten significantly
worse here, as it is now crashing every 3 or 4 minutes when not even
synching.

I will let everyone know what the situation is as I know.
