- Problems with Microsoft CRM installation
- Posted by Lemming on June 24th, 2005
Hi
Short time ago i tried to get Microsoft CRM installed on a Windows
Server 2003 Standard Edition. The server itself runs just perfeclty.
Now when I start CMR setup I got the message that my active directory
is not configured properly. Unfortunatelly this message is not very
detailed, so I only know that ac has to be configured in a special way,
but I do not know which settings have to be made and I do not know
where these settings have to be made. (Thanks to Microsoft
)
To make it a little easier to help me, I give you a short overview what
I think to know already and what I have done.
The server is configured as a stand alone domain controller. There is
not yet any SQL-Database-Engine installed, but Microsoft SQL ist
planned to be installed.
So can anyone give me some guideline to CRM installtion with special
focus on server settings and active directory configuration?
I thank you all for the time you spend on helping me and I hope to find
the solution to my problems here after having nothing found with
web-searches but the hints to some training programms to ms crm.
Thanks again and cu soon

Upgrade your active directory to win2003 network.
Default the AD is installed in mixed mode. CRM requires native mode or 2003
mode. Otherwise groupnesting is not possible this is required for MSCRM.
So upgrade AD and your set to go....
Gog luck,
Ron

Thanks so far
Another question: is it correct, that the server has definitly to be
configured as domaincontroller? I got two opinions to this question.
Some guy that has successfully installed mscrm says the server has to
be a domaincontroller, microsoft says mscrm should not be installed on
a comaincontroller.
so what is true?

"you can"
this helps a little..... but what is the most recommended way?

The only "supported" configuration with CRM on a DC is to use SBS. It "can" be
isntalled in some situations without trouble on a DC, but if this is a
production installation, than stick with a supported config which is not on the
DC (assuming non-SBS).

Although heavily un-supported, on several Win 03 (non-sbs) installations we
have had CRM, Exchange, DC, AD, DNS, SQL, the whole shooting match on one
server and it works 100% (has been heavily tested). Mind you it took several
attempts to get the steps down pact and it has to be done in a specific way,
but once we figured out it was great. It is amazing how having to buy more
servers (software, licensing and hardware) for a small company, can loose you
a deal. So putting it all on one can be very cost effective for them and win
you a deal.
Not to say you should rush out and do this, being us-supported and all but
we have found it to be a cost effective alternative for small companies that
cant afford to splash out on more servers. We have a fair few under the belt
now that are working without issue.

Nathan
