Hi All,

We've had some debate between our DBAs and the Sales team
as to the purpose of the TOPIC field for leads and
opportunities. From the CRM documentation, the purpose
seems to be a simple deal descriptor..makes sense.

However, our sales guys have difference ideas as to what
to put in it and how often it can be changed--like all the
time.

Does anyone have a good definition for the TOPIC field
and/or developed a good convention for details placed in
here?

We know we can sort by TOPIC so I assume you need to get
the sales guys using some kind of conversion to make
sorting remotely useful. Also, from a querying
perspective, you don't really want status or stage data in
there for this can be driven off another query view.

The topic is a free form field so you can pretty much put in whatever you
want.

I guess you could develop standards that say you must enter data such as
type etc ie what is the lead for?

for opportunities we added an opportunity type field and put in weather it
wass for

networking
support
telephony
etc
etc

My experience has always been that fields like that usually have the product
or service that the lead is interested in. This is after having been around
4 or 5 differnt implementations of varying productts.
