You say you went directly from MDAC 2.5 to 2.8. This page shows that 2.71a
is sufficient for Windows 2000 Server:

What OS are you running?

I'm trying to figure out what the bare minimum MDAC requirement is for an
installation that yields a working version of
CRMCustomization.RetrieveEntityXML().

I've been able to verify that RetrieveEntityXML() works on this version of
MDAC:

MDAC: 2.7 SP1 Refresh
OS: Windows 2000 Server

So, it's not necessary to move all the way up to 2.8 on Win2K. I think 2.8
may come pre-installed on Windows 2003 Server.

I am amazed to see a comment after all this time. The OS that I am running
is win2k, the suggestions for repair came from tech support - not my
research. I suppose that you can run 2.71a but 2.8 is working great for me.
