- Reporting Services
- Posted by Aaron Hardwick on October 2nd, 2004
The new SQL Reporting Services pack for CRM is very impressive. The
performance for some of the reports including the ability to drill down from
the customer into all Opportunities, Quotes etc is amazing, especially
compared to Crystal. I have one concern though. This obviously bypasses the
MSCRM webservice infrastructure, and therefore also does not enforce the
security in MSCRM. Does anyone know if or how MS plans to address this? I am
guessing this will require transitioning to having the security managed by
SQL.
Thanks,
Aaron

For now and the next release of CRM I believe we will still be using
crystal. Beyond the 2005 release I would hope we switch over to sql
reporting services. If that happens then of course Microsoft will integrate
it with CRM security just as crystal does today.

so if i understand correctly: MS CRM 2.0 will still be using Cryst Entreprise
as report delivery solution & Cryst Report as report design tool. the
release after that will be using Reporting Solutions...?
however, we can already start using Reporting Solutions now, with the new
report pack for CRM. but doing so, we would then bypass the ms platform, and
thus also the ms crm security mechanism? am i correct?
and at last, can we use Reporting Services for reports already made by Cryst
Report?
thx

MS CRM 2.0 is now being called MSCRM 2005. In that version, SQL Reporting Svcs
will replace Crystal as the reporting engine. You can not run a Crystal Report
through SQL Reporting Svcs.
As to the security point, I'm not so sure that it is bypassing it with the
reporting pack, but I haven't played with it yet.

and what do you recommend then we should do with existing crystal reports?

I wouldn't do anything with the reports provided with the product. I can only
assume that CRM 2005 will come with reports just like the current version does.
If you have modifed reports or have created new reports, then I recommend you
wait until CRM 2005 comes out before doing anything, unless you want to migrate
the to Rptg Svcs. but there are no guarantees that reports written against the
existing DB will work against the CRM 2005 DB.
