Resolving Email Address to existing contact problem

Has anyone else come across this issue in MSCRM3.0? - when you attempt to
resolve an email address to an existing contact in CRM (that does not
currently have an email address stored in their details) the contact resolves
OK but does not update the email address in the contacts details.

Is this by design, or have I found a bug?
