String Field Length Issues - Known Bug
Posted by lindad on August 22nd, 2003

FYI: MBS Support has acknowledged the following as a bug
for which a patch is being prepared. No due date for the
patch yet, however. Also there are no TKs on this (at
least none we've seen).

When creating new string fields via Deployment Manager you
specify a size/length. When the field is saved (created),
it only reflects at 1/2 of the size you specified. For
example, if you type the length of a string field as 25
characters, it will be created with a length of 13
characters.

You can confirm this by looking at the attribute's schema
properties in Deployment Manager, through the raw SQL
table or through the Attribute table in the meta
database.

There is no workaround for existing fields you may have
already created. While waiting for the patch, new fields
can be added by entering them as twice the size you really
want. So if you want a 25-character field, enter the
length value as 50.

Do suggest that you test this on your own deployment to
confirm that this is an issue at your site.

UPDATE: This only occurs when Microsoft CRM patch TK30845
is applied. This is the patch that repairs issues with
the export of customizations (also a string field length
issue).
