- adding a device
- Posted by as on July 15th, 2003
I go to scanners and cameras in my control panel. I click
on add device for a new digital camera it prompts me
to "install from disk" I put in a disk, as the mfgr isn't
listed, so I click on "have disk". I put in disk and click
ok, then this msg comes up." Specified location does not
contain information about your hardware." How can I
install a device then. Am I missing a step, or is maybe
something wrong with the disk itself, and how can I tell?
Am I even in the right group for this question.. Thanks

If you look closely at the window and note the file it is looking for and then
search the disk for that file from within Windows Explorer.
However it might be that you don't use Add New Hardware for that camera, but
simply run the program (autorun or setup.exe) on the disk and it will then
install your hardware drivers etc.
If it's a USB interface, run the disk BEFORE connecting up the camera and then
all should be installed ok.
Mike.

Furthermore, if you have already connected the device before installing the
software, you may have installed conflicting Windows' generic drivers.
Sometimes steps must be followed to remove these wrong drivers before it
will install correctly. Follow the instructions to the letter, but now,
possibly, you may have to visit their website for help if wrong drivers have
been installed. Also, sometimes the CD is missing a step. If you *did*
install the software first before connecting the device, you could let it
try to find the drivers on its own, or you might need to browse the CD for
Drivers\Win9X\USB or WinMe\USB or something like that once the camera is
connected to the USB port.

Did you read the instructions that came with the device? Many of these
devices require that the drivers be properly installed before the device is
connected.
