- Applicatioins stall regularly
- Posted by pippin on February 7th, 2004
I am running ME on a PII 266 with 196Mg of RAM and I
regularly have applications (word, IE6 etc) stall for
about 30 seconds every 5 mins or so. I have cleaned out
all spyware/adware and updated everything but nothing
working. Any suggestions?
Also, how do I get the list of running processes to come
up? At least then I could see what is using the CPU when
the applications stall.
Thanks
Pippin

Pippin,
Try using a process viewer to see if you can identify which process is using
cpu cycles and possibly causing you your problems.
Suitable viewers include the old but still functional WinTop (part of the
equally old Win95 Powertools available from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/d...oy/Default.asp)
through TaskInfo 2003, unfortunately no longer free, (www.iarsn.com) to
SysInternals Process Explorer (www.sysinternals.com where you will also find
many other useful tools and utilities).

Hello Pippin;
Just another thought for you to try. If the slowing down
has come about following a long period of computer usage,
say over several months, then you need to defragment your
hard drive. You can find Scandefrag, which is the tool
recommended by this Newsgroup, by using Google and doing a
search on the Internet. I hope this helps. It did for me.
