- boot hang up
- Posted by KathleenK on January 14th, 2004
I have the same problem BillyG has, however, my computer
will not boot up completely at all as of yesterday. Win
ME logo comes up, the icons load on the desktop but the
system hangs up after the printer and sound icons appear
in the lower right hand corner. I wonder if a program is
corrupt and preventing the rest of the programs to boot
up. Could this be a Norton anti-virus program issue?
Please help! My computer has become a paperweight!

Get a copy of Boot Log Analyzer, BLA, free, from:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...d,22895,00.asp
Another site is http://www.blueorbsoft.com/ble/ , which contains specific
info on how to create a fresh bootlog.txt and a different free app for
analyzing the file.
Post back with your results.

I assume you mean that I can download this from a working
computer, save to disk and insert in the non-working
computer? My problem is that I cannot get booted enough
to access the internet on the affected computer, and I
cannot get the non-working computer to start without
using a boot disk. Wil the 2 sites you suggest include
the capability to boot the computer and then analyze the
problem?

How do I do that when I am unable to get the machine up
completely? Do I have to use DOS with a boot disk? I
have tried to start up in safe mode and am unable to do
so either.

Have you tried safe mode?

Yeah, I should have been more specific........you would have to dl'd the BLA
from a working computer, of course. Also, you would have needed to be
able to boot into the Safe Mode......which you can't, as noted in your
subsequent posts.
Guess we need a guru to step in.........sorry to have been of no help.

You can always try this, it won't hurt:
A registry repair:
Boot from a startup disk and at the prompt type:
scanreg /fix (note the space between g and /)
Press enter, wait for the process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk.
If this doesn't work, try a registry repair:
Again, boot from a startup disk, and at the prompt type:
scanreg /restore (note the space between g and /)
Enter. Select a date prior to the problem and let the process finish.
Reboot WITHOUT the disk.
Any luck?
