can't download windows updates
Posted by Jill on January 5th, 2004

Hi,
I have been going into my windows updates that opens in
my start menu. When I click on it to search for updates to
my windows ME, it says I have 3 critical updates. I click
on "install now", then it looks like it's going to start
the upgrade but the progress stays a 0 and nothing
happens. When I go into my update history, it says they
all failed.
My computer has been acting weird for about 6 months now
but it's not too bad. I can still use it fine. I just have
a feeling that there is a problem pn my C drive. I have
run all virus scans and things to check your computer and
it doesn't find anything. There is some reason why I cand
download the updates and sometimes I cand do the
maintenance. When it gets to disc defrag, it stays on 0
also.
Ant suggestions? Is there some program I can run that
will check my hard drive for problems? There must be
something messed up somewhere.
Thanks for your time!
God Bless,
Jill )

Are you shutting your AV down before attempting the updates?
Heirloom, old and that could do it

Jill,

First, look in the WINDOWS\Inf folder for the presence of 1,000's of 0
byte OEM*.inf files . If found, follow the steps here :

For the scandisk and defrag issue, boot to Safe Mode and see if you can
run them from there :

As Heirloom stated, remember to temporarily disable your antivirus and
any script blocking component of it prior to accessing Windows Update,
download, or installing patches/updates. Also, pop-up stoppers, web
accelerators, download programs, and any 3rd party internet software
that may interfere.
