- defrag problem
- Posted by Sacha on February 2nd, 2004
Hello,
When i defrag, the progress meter only goes up to 3% and then goes down to 0%. This happens over and over again so the defrag doesn't work. I tried running defrag through the start/run and typing 'msconfig' in the open box, but the same problem recurs, and in addition I get the following message before defrag starts:
"Unable to synchronize the environment variables in the Windows Registry with the environment variables in the legacy files AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS" After hitting OK to this message the defrag goes on but resets to 0% once it gets to 3% finished.
Any comments and suggestions are appreciated,
sj

Hi Sacha,
Download, install and run the program listed below from Koldbear and
Associates. It is a free program designed to help resolve the kind of
problem you are having. Be sure to follow all the instructions carefully.
========================================
Get the free ScanDefrag. It is the most advanced disk maintenance
program there is. It runs Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk, and Disk
Defragmenter. It's easy to setup and use, and it can deal with
problems like "drive's contents have changed: restarting...".
Get it and read about all the options it has that you can use.

It is not unusual to see Defrag restart a number of times.
It is , however, unusual to see ScanDisk restart.
This is why I suggest starting it at bedtime and letting it run overnight.
Please, email "The ScanDefrag Team" if you have any problems using our
program. Your problem, will be properly attended to. And we assure you,
that every attempt will be made to resolved it..
To see how to email us, read the ScanDefrag "Readme" file, using ScanDefrag
under the "Help" menu.

Something is running in the background. You might try
disabling things one at a time in startup thru MSconfig.
I had the same issue after upgrading to AOL 8. Had to
close AOL before Defrag, prior to that version, it didn't
matter.

Go into Start, then Run, then type in "msconfig" less
the ".Then go to Startup and unclick all the boxes that
you see. Reboot and then do your maintenance. Once you are
finished go back into msconfig and reclick all the boxes.
Reboot. works for me
