Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows.
Posted by kirkblackwelder on January 3rd, 2004

When starting my PC, I encountered the following
error: "Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall
Windows." I followed the instructions as posted on the
support page using the my Me boot disk, but to no avail.
I still get the error! Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Which "support page" instructions are you referring to ? :

Error Message: Error Loading Explorer.exe You Must Reinstall Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306599

"Error Loading Explorer.exe" Error Message When You Attempt to Start Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299313

Error Message: Error Loading Explorer.exe You Must Reinstall Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299296

and, which Symantec (Norton) product is on your system ?

.... and I'm running Norton Antivirus. I'm not sure which
version but am currently hunting for the disk. I
purchased it last Spring if that helps any in the mean
time.

Thanks!

Do you still get the error when you remove the DVD hardware?

Yep ... same problem encountered!

Can I reinstall Windows over the top without losing my
files?

Post back here if you have any questions.

But first, have you tried a System Restore from Safe Mode?

Ok ... I'm in the process of reinstalling, however, from
another post I made earlier:

My machine hangs up "when the installer begins "Setting
up Hardware"
and the box reads "Windows Millennium Edition is now
setting up your hardware and any Plug and Play devices
you may have ..." with 15 minutes remaining, my computer
stops responding or hangs up. I've followed the
instructions and turn the machine off and then back on
numerous times, but continue to hang at that point. I've
even allowed the machine to sit for ~2-hours, hoping it
would continue on with the install."

I'm assuming this is related to Norton System Works and
Antivirus. What can I do to get around this? I can't
uninstall it from Safe Mode ... can do it from DOS?

Thanks!

I doubt that Norton would be a problem at this point.
Tell me exactly all the things you did when you tried to install your DVD Burner...step by step?

Also, Open your computer case. Check all the cable connections. Make sure they are firmly seated.

<paste>

This behavior can occur in the following situation:

* Windows Explorer is configured to automatically run a program on
startup.

-and-
* That program file is missing or damaged.

NOTE: If the program file that Windows is attempting to run is unknown
or unexpected, it may be part of a Trojan Horse program (virus).

</paste>

From this I conclude that error message borders on the criminally
negligent - pushing users into a destructive "fix" that is in fact
likely to be irrelevant and ineffective.

On Fri, 2 Jan 2004 19:10:36 -0800,

This suggests missing/bad items in System.ini shell= in particular,
and possibly the Windows part of startup axis in general

This suggests a bad Explorer.exe

This suggests a bad Msvcrt.dll and suggests extracting a new one from
the Windows .cab set (which may be a "too old" version)

In all three cases, "just re-install Windows" would be bad advice, yet
that's what the in-your-face message says: "You MUST re-install
Windows". It's too late for MS to fix that dumb-ass error message,
but they could at least join the three /kb articles into one, so that
each doesn't appear to be the one and only possibility.

See http://users.iafrica.com/c/cq/cquirke/dllhell.dll on a better
approach to managing shared .dll such as Msvcrt.dll - as installed
sware is very likely to upgrade this file's version, and *require* the
newer version, irreversable splat-back to .cab's file is ungood.
