- Posted by Sissy on January 22nd, 2004
I need too know if there is something I can
do.........Sometimes when I close a page I get an error:
Explorer has caused an error in unknown
Explorer will close now
If problem conitues, restart your computer.....well I do
that and it still does it. When I click close .....it
takes away my printer icon in my system tray....but i can
still use the computer without restarting if I choose
too...but I usually just go ahead and restart it anyway.

1. Check if a program running in the background is interfering with Internet
Explorer. Temporarily disable all Norton programs, including anti-virus, win
doctor, recycle bin protect, and clean sweep. Does Internet Explorer work
properly now?
Disable any firewall or ad-blocker.
2. Perform a repair of Internet Explorer. From Control Panel select
Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down to Microsoft Internet Explorer and
highlight it. Click on the Add/Remove button. When the IE Tools menu comes
up, select Repair. Click OK.
3. If repairing does not work, uninstall and reinstall IE. At the same IE
Tools menu, select "Restore the previous Windows configuration". Then
reinstall Internet Explore.
You can also access the IE Toolbar by clicking Start > Run and type
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

I see this question over and over and people respond with
the same nonsense. The person is asking about Windows
Explorer. You know: explorer.exe. AKA the Windows file
system. He's not talking about Outlook or IE !. I've
got the same problem on my PC and sure would like to get
it taken care of. BTW, I have Spybot/Adaware and neither
is finding anything - I still have the problem.

I'm sorry but any nonsense is in your post.
Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer are very closely intertwined using many
of the same modules. Let's just take one example. A small but very annoying
problem that is repeatedly posted in these newsgroups is that the user loses
the ability to display the folders in the left hand pane in WINDOWS Explorer
in Folder View. The fix, is to go to Add/Remove Programs, select INTERNET
Explorer, click Remove and then click Repair. Yes, repairing Internet
Explorer is what is required to fix the problem in Windows Explorer.

Ok, I see it's not nonsense after all !!! Thanks for
setting me straight. No change, tho, after I tried the
repair. Then I installed IE 6 again, no change. Then I
removed Internet Explorer Q82415 which had a separate
entry in Add/Remove Programs. I think it was an update I
got recently from MS. That fixed it up !! I went back up
to see what Q82415 was and couldn't find it. There is one
critical file up there on MS that I could download - It's
a KBxxxxx - don't remember the whole thing. But it has to
do with hackers running programs on my PC while visiting a
web site. Anyway, I'm free of that problem for now.
Thanks !

Sqweky,
Q824145 was the November cumulative update for Internet Explorer. This update
has a history of causing problems, primarily related to scrolling and
blocking/selecting text in Internet Explorer. The most recent February 2004
cumulative update for Internet Explorer that partly fixes the problems
introduced by Q824145 and also fixes several security weaknesses in IE was
released earlier this week . This replaces Q824145. The number of this
latest Cumulative Update is Q832894.
HTH.
More importantly though is that you appear to have fixed your problem,
Regards,

Mike,
I went back up to the MS update site and
downloaded/installed KB832894 just a few min. ago.
Immediately got the error msg when attempting to open "C\"
in Windows Explorer. And when this happens, icons on task
bar disappear and I really need to reboot. I basically
can't use explorer.exe with the security update
installed. I found a workaround of sorts by clicking
start/run and then using browse. It doesn't error out
then. Anyway, I removed KB832894 and no more errors.
WinMe is too qwerky for sqweky !! Only thing stopping me
from getting XP is that I only have 128M ram in this
Dell. I need to get some more memory first. That puts
price tag up to around $500 to get to XP.

Sqweky,
There seems to be something very odd without current system since I feel it is
your particular system rather than Win Me that is to qwerky for sqweky. <g>
As for the costs you mention of moving to XP, I am surprised. Memory is
currently pretty cheap but perhaps you are using a laptop that needs custom
memory of some sort. Here in the UK I can buy 512MB of RAM and an upgrade
edition of XP Home for <US$200, and possibly a fair bit less if I were to
look around.

At www.grc.com, I found and downloaded a free virus
scanner called Avert Stinger. When I ran the scan, it
found 28 files in my C:\_Restore directory infected with
W32/swen@mm. Avert didn't remove because it said Restore
needs to be disabled first. Well, I just upgraded to
Norton Anti-virus 2004 so I ran a system scan. It didn't
find the W32/swen@mm infection !! I then disabled Restore
and started Avert Stinger again and it appears to have
deleted the 28 infections. You can't contact Norton via e-
mail or voice to ask a question. You can pay them $39 and
they'll help you over the phone, though. There's some
info on their web site about W32/swen which I'll have to
read. But, I thought they said they have a current virus
definition for it. I'm up-to-date, I'm sure. Well, now
I'll try to get the MS security update again that I
deleted yesterday because it appeared to cause my "
unknown error " when I open Windows Explorer <<which is
the topic of this thread, BTW>>.

Mike,
I re-download that MS security patch for WinMe just now.
No explorer.exe problems. About upgrade to XP ... I see
where I can get the XP Home upgrade for $99. And 512MB
mem from www.4allmemory.com for $196. Better. Might go
for this next payday. I was stationed near Banbury years
ago - RAF Croughton. Nice country, there. Laters,

Hi Sqweky,
$99 sounds about right for a copy of XP Home upgrade but am just a bit
surprised at the price you quote for memory. I obviously have no idea as to
the box you're running but I see that 512MB of DDR PC2100 memory from
www.4allmemory.com that could go in this box (home build using an Abit BD7II
RAID) would cost me $84.99 and $86.99 for 512MB of PC3200 memory for my
Gigabyte box. Now that's pretty tempting. :-)
I don't know RAF Croughton but knew the area fairly well as I went to
(boarding) school in Oxford (not university, that was in London) in the late
50s, early 60s. Visited Upper Heyford quite a few times which was then a base
for I think B47s as a some of the kids from the base were at my school.

Your changing topic and "handle" sure threw me Sqweky. :-)
There really is no need to be concerned about any virus in the _RESTORE
archive as they are harmless there and can only cause problems if you later
choose to restore to a checkpoint created AFTER infection and BEFORE you
cleaned your system. Something I doubt you will be doing. Any worms, trojans
and viruses in the _restore archive will automatically be discarded in due
course as newer data is archived and the older files discarded The problem
with disabling system restore is that it flushes the _restore archive and
whilst that removes any virus remnants it also removes any good usable
checkpoints you might have and you never know when you might want to use that
lifebelt. A bit like the captain of a ship deciding he can do without
lifeboats and throwing them over board as he orders full speed into the ice
pack.
If you really are worried about this, then there are two approaches to
resolving your problem:
Firstly try reducing the space allocated to the System Restore archive as this
could flush out these unwanted files. Do this using the slider found at
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and reduce the allocated space
until you flush out the unwanted files.
If that fails, reset System Restore:
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and check "Disable
System Restore", Apply and IMMEDIATELY reboot. This will flush you restore
folder and erase all checkpoints, then,
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable
System Restore", Apply and again IMMEDIATELY reboot. This should now
automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following the restart.
Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder,
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore slider
to your preferred setting. A figure of 200MB is normally more than adequate
for day to day use allowing perhaps a week of checkpoints to be available
although increasing this to perhaps 400-500MB for a few days during periods of
large installs such Microsoft Office is advisable.

_Restore Folder" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=263455).
