Explorer has caused error
Posted by sjpiv on March 3rd, 2004

I have a client machine that is giving me "Elplorer has
caused an error in <unknown> Explorer will close. Then it
contenues. IE... request control panel, get error, get
error and even before I click on OK, control panel comes
up.

I am trying to avoid restoring machine if possible.

I would appreciate some direction as to what to do.

Thanks,
sjpiv

The error you are seeing is often caused by the presence of a parasite on your
system.

This might be a good time to download yourself a copy of the free Ad-Aware
6.0 from Lavasoft (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and also
SpyBot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) and scan your system for and remove
all unwanted parasites, adware and spyware that might be hiding on your PC.

Just is case the problem is due to a new version of the CoolWebSearch parasite
you might want to download and run the CWShredder which targets that specific
parasite. Unfortunately neither AdAware or SpyBot seem to be able as yet to
fully detect all the various versions of the CoolWebSearch parasite as it
keeps changing. For more details of the CoolWebSearch parasite see
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html.

You may have problems in accessing merijn's site at the moment as it is
currently under attack, probably by those responsible for CoolWebSearch. If
you can't get to that site then version v1.50.1 (itf not a more recent copy)
is also available from http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip.
