- Lost system restore
- Posted by Peter Warburton on July 15th, 2003
I had problems with the display and computer freezing.
I installed XP in a seperate partition as an elimination check but since the
problems were the same on XP I decided to remove XP.
Unfortunately the PC froze and I lost D drive which was system restore.
Following advice from the group ( thanks again ) the problems were solved by
the installation of a new graphics card, but I still don't have system
restore.
I have created D drive again. Is it possible to install system restore
without having to do a complete re-installation of ME.
I only have COMPAQ's quick restore disks, although I have the full
installation disk for XP.
Any advice would be appreciated.

What exactly do you mean by "lost system restore" please? That you have lost
the shortcut in Start | Programs ..? That you have no rstrui.exe file in your
windows\system\restore folder? That you have no _RESTORE folder on each
drive/partition? That you have no checkpoints? With some details as to your
exact problem someone will be able to help and no, you shouldn't have to
reinstall Win Me, something which is only very rarely required.

Hi Mike.
Apologies, I obviously haven't explained the problem very well. Please excuse
my inexperience.
Before losing D drive the drive contained a huge list of folders with
reference numbers, which basically didn't seem to change. The drive was
either system save or system restore. It's now empty.
I can access system restore via help and can create restore points.
Everything seems to be working normally, except that I have lost the
contents of D drive.
I hope this helps.

That D drive (I have one too, all lucky Compaq owners have one) has
nothing to do with System Restore in Me. And you don't need that D drive
to use System Restore. The System Restore checkpoints are stored on the C
drive in a super-secret folder called _RESTORE. Don't bother looking for
them, just know that they're there. The D drive, which is not a feature
of Windows, is for use with your Compaq Recovery CD that came with your
computer for restoring the computer to factory condition, but since you
have the Quick Restore Discs (which don't need the D drive but perform the
same task as the Recovery CD), you could do a restoration with those if
you ever chose to do so.
Reinstalling Windows Me would not put stuff on the D drive, because like I
said, it is a Compaq "feature" and not a Windows Me one. And, IMHO, it's
a rather poor "feature". Don't fret if you don't have anything on your D
drive right now. Instead, you should take advantage of it by storing your
own files on it. If you don't use it, it's wasted space. And System
Restore will still work since it has nothing to do with the D drive.

Peter,
I see that Monty has replied to your post. As he says, the folder on your D:
drive is nothing to do with Win Me's system restore but rather a "feature" of
your Compaq.
