I am working on a friend's ME box that had never had a critical update
done. Two critical updates won't install. KB832894 (Cumulative
security update) and 814078 (JScript version 5.6) LOOK like they are
installing and report "install complete", but report that they are not
installed after a reboot.
Any ideas?

Download them to the Hard Drive, close Internet Explorer. Open Internet
Options via the Control Panel and clear the Temporary Internet Files.
Temporarily disable the antivirus program installed . Now install the
updates one at a time. Reenable the AV after installation and any
required rebooting.
