ME hangs on startup
Posted by Brad on November 19th, 2003

Hang up occurs during statup at various points in the boot
up process. No error message appears. Happens before,
during and after Quick Launch icons appear, after desktop
icons finish loading, and after one or more Taskbar icons
appear. Like I said, no error message. Just hourglass
cursor. Can move mouse but can't click Start button or any
other icons. Can't use Ctr+Alt+Del. Have to reset or shut
down and restart. Usually completes booting after restart.
Any idea?

this happens to me often. when it's in the mood to do this, it usually
alternates every other startup.

I also used to suffer many freezes, but this has improved since I added
memory. could be coincidence. cause could be just luck that one of the
patches inadvertently fixed the freeze trouble.

previously I tried RAM testing prog, but it said RAM was fine.

eventually all of these freezes seem to have caused a disk error in my
system file directory. PITB to fix because I didn't want to reformat etc
etc, from scratch.

..

Obtain this program to analyze your bootlog.txt file
for loading speed, and problems:

BLA Boot Log Analyzer http://www.vision4.dial.pipex.com/files/bla.zip
http://www.aumha.org/a/bootlog.htm
http://www.aumha.org/freeware.htm

The DL'd file will include instructions for use.

-----------
BLA analyzes your Windows 95\98\ME BOOTLOG.TXT file and calculates the
time
taken to load each driver etc, in order to help in locating any cause of
lengthy boot-up times. The displayed result can be sorted by loading
duration, filtered to show only those items with long durations or which
reported failure, and saved to a text file.

You need to create a new Bootlog.txt after installing BLA.
To create a new Bootlog.txt:
Reboot, hold down the Ctrl key right after the Post message
Select: "Logged \bootlog.txt" from the menu and continue.

On the BLA Toolbar, click the options: "Show Delays\Show Failures".
Next, click File - Save As (example - slowboot.txt)
You can then open slowboot.txt in Notepad and paste
the info from slowboot.txt into your next post.
From there someone can better advise on any problems.
