Me thinks it has a setup pending
Posted by kathy on February 5th, 2004

I am running Windows Me. When updating Internet Explorer,
the sytem errored (I can't remember the error). Anyway, my
problem right now is that Windows seems to think it still
has a "setup pending a system restart." I don't have
anything pending. I have reinstalled the Windows
Installer. Help???? Is there a flag or registry entry that
can be changed to rectify this?
Thanks.

Check wininit.ini in the \Windows folder and see if it's trying to start
something.

kathy,

Is this the error message ? :
" A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need
to restart your computer to complete that installation before running
internet explorer setup. Setup will now close." "
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309314

Try the resolution in the above KB article. If that was not the specific
error message, was it this ?:
" A previous program installation was never completed. You need to
restart your computer to complete that installation before running
Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close. "

In either case, advise you to download and install AdAware:
http://lavasoftusa.com

On first running AdAware, click the globe icon to update the definition
files. Then read the Help file to learn how to best configure it to scan
your system . Now scan the system. AdAware may tell you that some files
are in use and the system needs to be rebooted to allow it to remove the
files. Even if you do not get this message, reboot the system and scan
it again.

Are you trying to install an update for IE or are you trying to upgrade it ?
