- missing hcappres.dll - other problems
- Posted by Frustrated on July 16th, 2003
I am unable to install Direct X 9.0. I get "unable to
copy file" during installation. When I try to run system
information the dll can't be found. I'm not convinced
these two problems are related. I cannot install critical
update patch 816093, and Q329414 installs but then shows
up as needing to be installed again. PLEASE HELP PLEASE!

Look in c:\windows\inf. You may have to change Tools/Folder Options/ View
to
show hidden folders. View this folder in Details under Views at the top.
Click Size to sort by size. Click twice if you need to to get the smallest
size at the top. Do you have a lot of 0 KB INF files? If so, this is one
problem. Delete all of these ... and in the future, disable Norton A/V and
close any Norton application before updating Windows or any Microsoft
program.
Next question: Have you reinstall WinMe on top of itself while IE 6 was
installed? This, too, will create a problem and now Critical Updates may
have to be installed manually after downloading them from the Catalog
section of Windows Updates. You would install IE 5.5 first with related
updates ... and then move on to IE 6 with related updates.
