I am trying to fix a friend's PC which gives the following error message
constantly. Explorer.exe has caused fatal error in MSCAB.DLL. (apologies if
that is not the exact wording, but I have got this info over the phone) His
OS is Win ME and he uses AOL. He cannot save or alter any Word documents
(Office 2000) and "Accessories" is missing from "programs" He cannot shut
down the machine without powering in down. As the machine tries to shut down
a file transfer window appears with a message "saving to your personal
filing cabinet" or something like that. I have searched for MSCAB.dll in
"Google" etc and "Mcafee.com and found nothing. I got him to search all
files and folders on his PC but still nothing. I then got him to do a text
search and registry search and still nothing. I managed to solve this
problem three weeks ago by
getting him to do a "scanreg" in dos and replacing registry with previous
day's registry. All worked fine for a week or so but now it's back and
"scanreg" will no longer get rid of it. ( I forgot to get him to back-up the
registry after I fixed it before). He's done a Virus Scan at Mcafee and no
virus was detected. He desperately needs Word working as he is a writer.
I posted this message on microsoft.public.security.virus and was told that
it probably isn't virus and could be a problem with AOL software. They also
suggested I post to you as I've had no luck getting any help from AOL
(nothing new there)
Anyone any ideas (he dosen't want to uninstall AOL.)

It appears to be something with AOL. Do a google search for this phrase and don't add any quotations.
