Norton Anti-Virus and Win Me
Posted by Scott on February 2nd, 2004

I currently have Norton Anti-Virus 2001.

For the same price I can either (1) renew the virus definitions for 2001, or
(2) buy Norton Anti-Virus 2004 with a year's worth of updates.

I have heard Norton Anti-Virus can interfere with Win Me.

What is the consensus recommendation out there? 2001 or 2004?

Thanks all,
Scott

I would suggest you do neither and seriously consider installing and using a
better and cheaper antivirus application that causes less problems when
installed on Win Me. IMO there are just so many better products than either
NAV or McAfee. Kaspersky, AVG and eTrust (Computer Associates) to name
but three.

Products that work well with Win Me and seem to cause less problems than NAV
include:
a) AVG (Free version) from GriSoft
(http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php)
b) eTrust from Computer Associates. This is an excellent low cost AV program
that I and many others contributing to these NGs are using. eTrust and
EZArmor are FREE to new users for one year until 30 June (see
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm) I understand from others that
just the AV application can be installed if preferred. EZArmor apparently is
a rebadged version of Zone Alarm v3.x which can cause Win Me's system restore
to stop making automatic system checkpoints.

Mike,

I've heard mixed reports but not having used it myself feel I shouldn't really
comment. I've got a copy here that came with a new laptop. Perhaps I should
give it a whirl. Another AV application that appears to be getting rave
reviews at the moment is NOD32 (http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm). Note I
haven't used or seen NOD32 myself.

I have windows ME & am running the "free version of AVG
Grisoft". I haven't had any problems with it. Been using
it for well over a year now.
I don't know the correct URL off hand but I think someone
else posted it already.
Good Luck, silver

Thanks.
I was asking because my computer illiterate friend got a new computer with
Panda installed. I have not heard of it before.
BTW I have Norton on Win ME platform. After initial instalation problems it
works fine.
As it turned out Norton uninstall leaves something in the Registry which
prevents next installation. They have quite elaborate procedure how to fix
it - involves editing registry which I did for the first time ever with
obvious trepitation but now it works perfect.

I'm running the 2003 version.

90+% of my problems have been with system restore. And they've been nasty
ones.

If I had it to do again, I'd seriously consider doing something else. I'm
not sure which way I'd decide, but I'd spend a long hard time thinking about
alternatives.

Do you have a link to the registry fix. I am having a problem with Norton
AV Pro 2004. After initial installation it will not open up. I have tried
cleaning out the registry and reinstalling with no luck.

Thanks,
Karen

Just a couple of comments on EZArmor. I have been using it since mid
December with no problems. I will need to check my system restore which is
mentioned as a possible conflict with the Zone Alarm portion. I gave up on
Norton Systemworks 2001 when it went astray and wiped out my sound and vidio
drivers. That was just last year after it running OK for 2+ years. i run Win
ME and IE6.0 SP1. I tryed AVG Free and also Avast! (also free) I like
EZArmor the best so far. The nice thing is they supply a Virus update
everyday except Sat & Sun.

Also another comment on Norton, my wife has Norton 2003 and Win 98SE. The
other day when our DSL provider was down for 36 hours (may switch to cable
modem) she could not use her offfice products (mainly Word 2001) It appears
that every time a document is scanned Norton goes out and checks its
certificate. I disable the certificate checking and all works well. This
problem first appeared when Norton let their certificate expired last month.
It also tells me not to trust Norton they are problably spying on you.

Hey, thanks to eveyone who responded to my query. I am pleased to announce
that I have switched from Norton to AVG for my virus protection. The switch
went smoothly.
