OE not working with Broadband
Posted by Ben Stevenson on February 20th, 2004

I had broadband installed by the ISP yesterday. Surfing the Net is OK
but
upon going to OE it says " This service does not currently work with
Outlook
Express". Downloading Newsgroups headers is also OK. The only problem
is
messages are not fully downloaded in the Inbox. Neither can I delete
red
messages in the Inbox. The pointer is consistently with the hourglass.
The
ISP says that Microsoft is aware of this problem but unresolved as
yet. Hard to believe them.I hope I don't have a problem sending this
post.

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account:
'Hotmail',
Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol:
HTTPMail, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCCF4

Outlook Express could not post your message. Subject 'OE not working
with
Broadband', Protocol: NNTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number:
0x8004108D

Header download for the 'Inbox' folder did not complete. Account:
'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp',
Protocol: HTTPMail, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 12019,
Error Number: 0x80004005

Will try to send either via Msn Hotmail or Google.
Cannot go to MSN Hotmail too. Sending by Google.
TIA

There are no general issues when using Outlook Express with broadband.
Outlook Express has little or no interest in the method you are using to
connect to the net be it by dial up, cable, xDSL in its various flavours or
satellite.

Your problem however seems more to be with your use of Hotmail using Outlook
Express but even then that you connect using broadband should make little
difference. I have done so here for over three years and have no problems in
sending or receiving e-mail via my Hotmail accounts although I prefer to use
SMTP/POP3 for my personal mailings. Note though that Microsoft have always
considered the Outlook Express interface to Hotmail to be "beta" and
unsupported.

One thing you should check is that you aren't blocking Hotmail cookies as
doing this can cause the "Unable to poll for new message problem" although
usually with a different error code than the one you mention. Other problems
can arise with ISP's proxy servers and also, although unlikely I think to be
the case here, with local firewalls.

Do you have any problems with Outlook Express when sending or receiving
messages via POP3/SMTP mail or when using NNTP news groups?

Hi Mike

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. the ISP people are hard to contact with their
promises to call back. Managed to talk to them today.

The ISP servers are HTTP. SMTP/POP3 is not used. Should not be a
problem as I had no problems for 3 years using DUN. The problem
somehow came when I switched to Cable broadband. The ISP continues
to say that this is an intermittent problem that Microsoft acknowledges and
I am not the only complainant. I fail to understand why I was OK with
DUN and not with cable.

I have no problems with the NNTP newsgroups. I can recieve all headers,
but posting replies is quite a problem. Neither can I send replies on MS
Hotmail. My problems seem to be at OE Inbox only and with sending
emails and posting replies to NGs.
TIA

As I said previously, use of Outlook Express to access http/web mail is very
much "beta" and unsupported by Microsoft.
