possessed puter!
Posted by denma designs on August 18th, 2003

I don't know why, but many of my files are missing. Data
bases where everything but the names disappear, files I
had treanslated in Spanish are all gone. I haven't done
anything weird. I didn't get the blaster thing cuz I have
WME and I checked my system. I ran virus scan nothing.
Where do they go? And every so often when I check
performance (ctrl>alt>del) it has some of your drives are
operating under msdos. Is it possessed or what? It took a
long time to do the database and to translate the files
and now they just up and disappear off my system? Any help?
AND I also do not have ANY restore points? I can't even go
back and restore. The program is set to do restore points
but it doesn't.

Doing a System Restore wouldn't help, anyway, since SRs (usually) ignores
all User-created files.

Win ME is not vulnerable to the MSBLAST worm (although I understand that
some of the variants can attack ME machines with RPC software installed)

You don't check 'performance' using C-A-D - that's does in many other ways,
but not that one!

Try this...

Start|Run
type

MSCONFIG

and click OK
click on the Startup tab - what's listed there? - compare it with the list
here, and see what you can/should remove.

Post back if you're uncertain about any entries.

Noel,
I may have messed up what I was saying. I don't check
performance with CAD, I use that to see what's running. I
do right click on my computer and then properties then
performance.

If you want to see what's really running on your PC, download a Process
viewer and use that - you'll find a lot more information.
Process Explorer - from www.sysinternals.com is a good one.

Did you try the MSCONFIG|Startup approach?

You don't say where they disappear from. In order to help we need to
know where you expect to find them but don't. In the meantime try this:

It is unlikely they have just disappeared, more likely you have
inadvertantly changed a setting so you don't see them where you expect.

If you have a database application it probably has a default location
for the databases, which you can change. If you did so, it may have
reverted to the default. If not, you may have done something to make it
look elsewhere. Check the Settings for the program.

If you know the name of a database then use Windows Search to check.
(Start, Search for files and folders)
You can use 'wildcards' so if you don't know the full name type the the
first few letters followed by *.*

Let me (us) know how you get on as soon as possible.
Send more details if you still have problems.

They disappear from my hard drive. I just last week
printed the data base for labels for a party. It was
saved, I opened it many times. Then when I wanted to run
them again for thank you cards, only the name was there. I
did them in MS Access. Also I had many files of memos for
the school that I translated into Spanish, they are all
gone.Other files in the same folder are still there though.

This is a very strange situation...

If you know the filename and folder, go to that folder from My Computer
and check the file size. You may need to change the Folder display
option: click View, Details at the top of the folder window and check
the list.
Have you looked in the Recycle Bin?

And, no offence, but you don't have any 'practical jokers' with access
to the machine in your absence do you?
