Problems Installing Microsoft Directx version 9.0
Posted by Paul on January 9th, 2004

My system: Dell, Pentium III Processor, 512MBRAM, OS:
Windows ME, Invidia 32 MB, GeForce 2 MX100 Dell Video Card

Problem: When I attempted to install Microsoft Flight
Simulator 2004, the setup program tried to install MS
Directx version 9.0. This locked up my computer. It
would not restart. I contacted Dell Support and they gave
me instructions how to restart my computer. In reviewing
MS instructions on Directx 9.0 I noted an instruction to
check the video card mfg. for possible updated drivers
that support directx 9.0. I contacted Dell Support. They
assisted me in downloading the latest NIVIDIA video
driver, and also downloading and installing MicroSoft
DirectX 9.0. This locked up my computer again. The
startup screen was blank. When I hit the escape button
the screen stated: " Windows could not upgrade the file %
1 from %2 %1:%2" The Dell Support person attempted to
return my computer to normal. We were unsuccessful. We
now have at startup a screen that reads "winit.exe
missing/unable to load. Press any key" Pressing any key
eventually brings the system up. Dell Support said that
the ME Windows system was corrupted, and I had to
reinstall the ME Windows system. I have three questions:

1. Will reinstalling my Windows ME correct the problem
associated with installing DirectX 9.0?
2. Can I reinstall Windows ME and not have to backup and
reinstall my application programs and files on the hard
drive?
3. If the answer to 2 is yes, how do I do it?

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Quoting Noel Paton:

Your %1/%2 error is caused usually by Norton LiveUpdate, corrupting the
System Restore archive - although there are other possible causes.
Do a Search for the file WININIT.INI - if you find it, then rename it to
WININIT.JNK, and reboot - your problem should be gone.
If you don't find it, then try this - Start|Run - enter SCANREG /FIX into
the dialog box, and click OK - windows will reboot - see if that fixes it.
If not, then do a Search on your PC for files named '_RESTORE' (without the
quotes) - you should find the C:\_RESTORE folder - r-click on it, and select
Properties. How many files/folders are there? If it's around 64thousand,
then LiveUpdate has been up to its tricks again, and you'll have to
completely remove the folder from DOS - use the following method, which
seems to be the easiest at present.

Reboot to DOS using your Startup disk
enter the following commands at the A:\> prompt.

ATTRIB -R -H -S C:\_RESTORE
REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

remove the floppy, and reboot to normal windows. - your error should be
gone, and you should now have a new, single restore point. Go to Windows
Explorer, and delete the C:\OLDREST folder.

Unquote.
