comgf.dll error in explorer everytime I boot (win ME)
Posted by Robert on March 7th, 2004

Please if anyone can help me on this issue. I am trying
to fix my friends machine (All they use it for is to surf
the web) I have determined they have a ton of Hijack
issues and adware removed over 1K item already. Here is
the main problem.

Everytime the Machine boots up. They get a error:

"Explorer has caused an error in comgf.dll explorer will
now close"

I did a Google search and nothing is found for comgf.dll.

Please can anyone help me fix this.

He is running an older machine with Microsoft ME edition.

Please send responses to rwcjr72@aol.com or respond to
this message.

Thank you

Your friends PC still has a parasite since comgf.dll is not part of Win Me.

Win Me contains no file named comgf.dll. I suspect however that you have a
trojan or parasite on your PC since there have been a other reports in the
last few days of users having problems with a file named COM<random
characters>.DLL which in itself is suspicious.

If you haven't already done so I would strongly recommend that you check your
system for possible viruses using your preferred anti virus application
equipped with an updated set of viral signatures. However you might first
want to check your PC using one of the online virus checks such as McAfee's
online checker (http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp) or Trend Micro's
Housecall (http://housecall.antivirus.com).

I would also urge you to check for possible commercial parasites, spyware and
other assorted adware. This might be a good time to download yourself a copy
of the free Ad-Aware 6.0 from Lavasoft
(http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and also SpyBot
(http://www.safer-networking.org/) and scan your system for and remove all
unwanted parasites, adware and spyware that might be hiding on your PC.

Just is case the problem is due to a new version of the CoolWebSearch parasite
you might want to download and run the CWShredder which targets that specific
parasite. Unfortunately neither AdAware or SpyBot seem to be able as yet to
fully detect all the various versions of the CoolWebSearch parasite as it
keeps changing. For more details of the CoolWebSearch parasite see
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html.

You may have problems in accessing merijn's site at the moment as it is
currently under attack, probably by those responsible for CoolWebSearch. If
you can't get to that site then version v1.50.1 (itf not a more recent copy)
is also available from http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip.

Mike - Thank you for the quick response. I downloaded
ADware and it found over 1,300 items. Then I downloaded
the CWshredder and it said a ton of items which were
infected. I ran it and it said it removed everything,
but I did notice it said make sure all windows are closed
or the collsearch parasite can not be completly removed.

The problem with that comgf.dll window, everytime I click
close or try to close it from Alt-Control-Del it just
pops up again? So I think the CWshredder PRG did not
completely reemove everything....I ran a scan again and I
was right there is still about 12 items with parasite.

Any ideas how to get that pop up error window closed so
the cwshreader prg can work..

I am going to run those two online virus checks now.
